Jewell Cardwell: Good Neighbors needs volunteers to stay open

In a desperate appeal, longtime Good Neighbor volunteer Lee Wallach has asked me “to please scare up some younger volunteers” to help at the Spicer unit of Good Neighbors, located inside Trinity Lutheran Church, 50 N. Prospect St., Akron. So, that’s what I’m trying to do.

“There were once five clothing units in the city of Akron,” the 80-something Wallach said. “They were located in North Hill, West Side at Work Drive and West Exchange Street, Firestone Park, EACH [East Akron Community Housing], and Spicer Street. … We are now down to only one unit in the inner city, and we are planning to shut our doors Feb. 28 if we can’t find some fresh blood.”

The unit provides clothing for families in need. Wallach — who has been invested for many years in the organization’s mission — said if the Spicer unit closes, clients will have to go to Ellet or the Wooster-Hawkins area.

“We need folks (men and women) who are willing to serve a half-day two or more Thursdays a month. We open the doors at 9:30 for clients, but volunteers arrive 30 to 45 minutes earlier to set up. … We also keep records of who has received help, how many in the family and the date they were served.”

Presently, the Spicer unit is operated by two volunteers who are under 70 and five in their 80s. And, quite frankly, they want to and deserve to retire.

Here is CORE’s pitch as detailed on www.core
