Father arrested
AKRON: An Akron man is accused of driving a stolen car with his two children sleeping in the back seat.
Akili Woodard, 23, was booked Monday into the Summit County Jail on charges of receiving stolen property and child endangering.
Police said he was driving a stolen vehicle with a suspended driver’s license when he was stopped Monday at Frederick Boulevard and Bellevue Avenue.
Officers say Woodard’s two children were in the back seat. They were asleep and not secured in car seats, police said.
A female passenger, Jazmen N. Davis, 22, of Akron, was charged with receiving stolen property and child endangering.

New assistant chief
AKRON: A longtime member of the Akron Police Department has been tabbed as the city’s assistant police chief.
Lt. Charles Brown, a 27-year veteran, will assume the role of assistant to the mayor, assistant police chief, on Sunday. He will report to Chief James Nice.
Among Brown’s duties will be assisting Nice in all police functions, administrative investigations, personnel issues, communication and public relations.
Brown has most recently been commander for police community relations, COPS, and the Gang Unit. He has also worked in internal affairs, narcotics and SWAT.
He has a criminal justice technology degree from the University of Akron.
Brown will not report to the mayor, and he will not be a member of the mayor’s Cabinet. Brown’s annual salary will be $104,353, which the city said is consistent with the salaries of other mayoral assistants.
Tax amnesty ends
AKRON: The amnesty is over.
Akron plans to go after those who are delinquent on their income taxes.
The city teamed up with the Central Collection Agency in Cleveland last year to identify and seek out delinquent taxpayers. An amnesty program was offered for businesses and individuals who were delinquent in filing, had failed to file or hadn’t reported all of their income on Akron tax returns.
After the amnesty period, the agency cross-referenced city tax returns with state and federal data to identify those who didn’t file with Akron or who under-reported their income. The agency has mailed out its first batch of 500 letters to Akron taxpayers. Two more mailings will go out this month to the remaining 5,000 individuals.
Taxpayers who receive letters should respond immediately to the agency to avoid further penalties, fees and possible prosecution.

CANTON
Police win raises
CANTON: The City Council has approved 2 percent pay raises for police officers.
The increase is retroactive to Jan. 1.
The council’s action Monday involved a wage reopener in a contract reached in 2012 with the Canton Police Patrolmen’s Association.
The provision also will affect ranking officers in the Fraternal Order of Police, because their pay is based on their subordinates’ compensation.
Last year’s collective bargaining agreement did not include raises.
COPLEY TOWNSHIP
Trustees to meet
COPLEY TWP.: The Copley Township Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at Copley Town Hall, 1540 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road.
The purpose of the meeting is to greet the newly appointed Architectural Review Board members along with discussing their role in the Copley Township Zoning Resolution. The meeting is open to the public.
GREEN SCHOOLS
President named
GREEN: The Green Board of Education chose Steven Foster to succeed Bob Campbell as president at a nine-minute organizational meeting Monday evening.
Mark Hurdlick was chosen as vice president.
Campbell, in his eighth year on the board and president for the past six, said Foster had talked with him about the position, and he agreed to step aside.
Foster is in his sixth year on the board.
In board action, members granted permission to solicit bids for the demolition of the vacant Kleckner Elementary School. Asbestos abatement has been completed.
