AKRON
Woman assaulted
AKRON: Akron police said they arrested a 20-year-old man Monday after he kicked a woman who is pregnant with his child in her stomach.
Devonte Davis was charged with domestic violence and criminal damage after police said he threw a brick through the windshield of her vehicle and kicked her.
The woman is seven months pregnant, according to police.
Passenger shot
AKRON: An Akron woman is listed in critical condition after she was shot late Monday on the city’s west side.
The woman, 21, is being treated at a local hospital. No suspect has been identified.
Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards said the woman was one of at least six people inside a 1997 Chevrolet van. When the vehicle reached the intersection of Madison and Garth avenues, the victim was shot once from a gun fired inside the van, he said.
At least two women inside the van accompanied the victim to the hospital, while the van’s driver fled. The van was recovered early Tuesday morning.
Edwards said the shooting is not related to a shooting death of a man that took place last week inside a home on Madison Avenue. Monday night’s shooting took place about 10 houses away from the earlier shooting that centered on a dispute among relatives.

CANTON
Park levy proposed
CANTON: A City Council majority is proposing passage of a 4-mill, three-year property tax levy to support parks and two recreation centers.
Council members Mary Cirelli and Edmond Mack cast the only two votes Monday against putting the issue on the general election ballot in November .
Cirelli characterized the issue as “too much tax,” adding that a 2-mill levy would have been more palatable.
The issue would raise $2.9 million a year and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $100 a year.
In addition to supporting city parks, the money would aid the J. Babe Stearn Community Center in the southwest section of the city and the Edward L. “Peel” Coleman Community Center in the southeast section.
Money currently spent on parks would be directed to police and other safety expenses, Councilman Thomas West said.
CUYAHOGA FALLS
Debris thrown
CUYAHOGA FALLS: Two 11-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy were arrested after Cuyahoga Falls police say they tossed debris and concrete at cars near Howe Avenue.
The boys were arrested Saturday night after a car was struck by a softball-sized chunk of concrete. The driver and his son, 5, were not injured. The vehicle sustained minor damage to its hood.
Officers first received a call about 8 p.m., when motorists saw debris falling from a railroad crossing over Howe Avenue near state Route 8. Police said they found several small wooden logs and chunks of concrete in the roadway. One 50-pound block of concrete was among the debris tossed.
Officers surveyed the area and found the boys riding bicycles. The boys were questioned and police said they admitted throwing items from the bridge.
The boys are charged with misdemeanor delinquency counts of vehicular vandalism, criminal damaging and criminal trespassing.

LAKE SCHOOLS
Board OKs cuts
LAKE TWP.: By a 3-2 vote, the Lake Board of Education authorized the superintendent and treasurer to further reduce expenditures and services by $1.5 million for the 2013-2014 school year.
Reductions could include extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, transportation services, staff and other programs and services.
Board members Jon Troyer and Derrick Bailey voted no, stating the resolution was too vague on what expenditures would be reduced, and said they wanted to see exactly what cuts would be made.
The board also agreed to enter into a contract with CCG Energy Solutions Inc. to perform an Energy Conservation Retrofit Project for buildings in the district.
The board agreed to issue and sell bonds in the principal amount of $3.5 million to pay the costs of installations, modifications and remodeling of school buildings to conserve energy.
Bailey voted against the project, saying he could not approve it when the district was looking to cut $1.5 million for the upcoming school year.
