Akron held a birthday bash Saturday night to celebrate 10 years of concerts and events at Lock 3.

Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone played Saturday night to mark the occasion.

Lock 3 opened in 2003 amid much fanfare marking the $9 million project’s completion.

Lock 3 draws more than 200,000 people during both the summer and winter seasons, nearly reaching 500,000 total visitors in 2011. The venue features concerts every Friday and Saturday nights from Memorial Day through Labor Day, five festivals during the summer and numerous community events.

A Hip Hop Showcase featuring De La Soul and other artists will be held tonight. (The hip-hop concert will be in the Civic Theatre in anticipation of rain.)

Other events are planned before the weather turns cold. They include the first Global Village Festival, an international festival, on Sept. 8, and the second annual Irish Heritage Festival on Sept. 14 and 15.

Community groups also have events planned, including the United Way of Summit County, which plans to kick off its 2012 campaign with a cornhole tournament from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 12. Planners hope to break the record for the most people playing in the same competition.
