Smith foundation awards $97,100 in grants

The Lloyd L. & Louise K. Smith Memorial Foundation awarded $97,100 in grants to local nonprofit organizations at its 2012 year-end meeting. The recipients are:

• Act II Production (The Illusion Factory), for actors’ rehearsal salaries, $500.

• Akron Art Museum, for Kids Art classes, $2,500.

• Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, for operations and endowment, $4,500.

• Akron Children’s Hospital, for Pediatric Palliative Care River of Life program, $1,000.

• Akron Community Service Center and Urban League, for School’s In program, $2,500.

• Akron Rotary Camp for Special Children, for operations, $2,000.

• Akron Summit Community Action Agency, for YouthBuild program, $2,500.

• American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties, for Superstorm Sandy assistance, $1,000.

• Ballet Theatre of Ohio, for 20th season support, $1,000.

• Battered Women’s Shelter, for crisis intervention specialist, $4,000.

• Beacon Journal Charity Fund, for orthodontic care, $5,100.

• Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve, for educational programs, $3,000.

• Central Summit County Choral Society, for Summit Children’s Choir and satellite programs, $1,000.

• Child Guidance & Family Solutions, for Building a Healthier Community capital campaign, $2,500.

• Children’s Dyslexia Centers of Akron, for after-school tutoring, $2,500.

• Civic Theatre, for All Access and Community Partnership program, $1,500.

• Crown Point Ecology Center, for organic farming apprentice, $2,000.

• Cuyahoga Valley Preservation and Scenic Railway, for Passenger Comfort: Restroom Renovations project, $1,500.

• Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet, for Reach Out and Dance program, $1,500.

• Downtown Akron Partnership, for First Night Akron community outreach program, $2,000.

• Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center, for lessons, $2,000.

• Friends of 91.3, for KIDJAM! Radio, $500.

• Friends of Metro Parks, for Outside Is In, $1,000.

• Furnace Street Mission-Safety Forces Chaplaincy Center, for counseling for police and fire personnel and their families, $500.

• GASP (Guardian Advocating Child Safety and Protection), for program support, $1,000.

• Haven of Rest Ministries, for food, shelter and care of residents, $2,500.

• Ideastream-WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN, for operations, $1,000.

• Mental Health America of Summit County, for adolescent suicide prevention program, $1,500.

• Mobile Meals, for meals and supplements, $4,500.

• Musical Arts Association, for Blossom Music Center Festival, $4,000.

• National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Ohio Buckeye Chapter, for respite care program, $500.

• Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, for Richard Howe House exhibits, $1,500.

• Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges Inc., for Summit County tuition assistance, $2,500.

• Old Trail School, for reading fluency program, $1,000.

• Our Lady of the Elms School, for wireless infrastructure enhancement project and One to One project, $2,500.

• Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, for operations, $500.

• Portage Path Behavioral Health, for Akron clinic roof replacement, $500.

• Project LEARN of Summit County, to recruit volunteers and tutors, $2,500.

• Salvation Army — Summit County Area Services, for hot meals program, $5,000.

• South Street Ministries Inc., for youth programming and activities, $500.

• St. Sebastian Parish Foundation, for pipe organ restoration, $2,000.

• Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens Inc., for annual fund, $4,500.

• Stewart’s Caring Place, for program support, $1,000.

• Summa Health System, for Heart Care at Home program, $1,500.

• Summit Education Initiative, for Destination College workshops, $1,500.

• Victory Gallop, for rider scholarships, $2,000.

• Weathervane Community Playhouse, for current season support, $2,500.

• Western Reserve Public Media, for acquisition costs, $1,000.

• Williams Challenge, for Man 2 Man fatherhood initiative program, $500.

• Youth Excellence Performing Arts Workshop (YEPAW), for 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Conference, $1,000.
