CANTON: Police were investigating two unrelated shootings that left one man dead and a teenager wounded.
The first shooting took place early Saturday outside the Friendly Corner Tavern, 1503 Harrison Ave. SW, police said.
Roosevelt Newell Jr., 41, of Canton, was shot in the upper leg about 2:15 a.m. He was taken to Aultman Hospital, where he died from his wound at 8:30 a.m., authorities said.
Stark County coroner’s investigator Harry Campbell said an autopsy was scheduled for today, and a ruling on the death would be made afterward.
Sgt. Steve Swank said police have issued an arrest warrant on a first-degree murder charge for Samuel D. Woods, 29, whose last known address was in Columbus.
Anyone with information about the shooting or Woods’ whereabouts is asked to call the Canton Police Detective Bureau at 330-489-3144.
Police were called to the second incident at 2:10 p.m. at the Skyline Terrace Apartments in the 800 block of Alan Page Drive Southeast, for the report of a large fight. While police were en route, they received two other calls, one reporting that shots had been fired and another reporting that someone had been hit.
Kaylee Robinson, 18, of Canton, was taken to Aultman Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Swank said a sizable crowd remained on the scene when police arrived. Police obtained warrants to search several apartments and arrested Twanda Clark, 30, who lives in the complex. They found her hiding in a closet of another apartment, he said.
Police charged Clark with felonious assault. She could face additional charges, Swank said.
