Home invaded
AKRON: Police are investigating a home invasion that occurred Thursday night.
Authorities say two men entered a home in the 300 block of East Archwood Avenue through an unlocked window shortly after 7 p.m.
The victim, a 65-year-old woman, told police that the men, who were armed with guns, confronted her while she was in bed watching television. She was not injured.
The suspects took $200 and a laptop computer.
BATH TOWNSHIP
Fire promotion
BATH TWP.: Trustees this week approved the promotion of firefighter Scott Arcangeli to the post of part-time lieutenant in the Bath Fire Department.
Fire Chief Walt Hower said Arcangeli is a full-time employee of the Garfield Heights Fire Department and his experience in that post will benefit Bath residents.
Following approval of the promotion, trustee President Elaina Goodrich administered the firefighter’s oath of office, and Arcangeli’s wife, Tonya, did the honors of pinning on his lieutenant’s badge.
Arcangeli will be on a one-year probationary status with the department.

Bat has rabies
MEDINA: Tests have confirmed a rabid bat in the East Liberty Street area of the city of Medina, the Medina County Health Department reported Friday.
There was no reported exposure to any residents or family pets, the health agency said.
The bat was sent to the Ohio Department of Health laboratory in Columbus on Wednesday for testing. The results came back Thursday.
Rabies typically shows up in Medina County every one to three years. The last reported Medina County rabies case was in a bat from Medina city in 2011.

Scouts pick CEO
The Girl Scouts of North East Ohio are turning to a former Cleveland Metroparks marketing director to be their new chief executive officer.
Jane Christyson was selected by the group’s board on Wednesday and will start in her new job March 18.
The Strongsville resident has more than 30 years of experience working for nonprofits, including 24 years with the parks. She also has worked with United Way Services of Cleveland and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
She has a daughter who is a Girl Scout and was a Girl Scout herself, earning what is now known as the Gold Award. She has been a Girl Scout leader for seven years.
Annual banquet
CANTON: The East Central Ohio Pilots Association’s annual awards banquet will be at 6 p.m. Friday at the Skyland Pines Golf Course, 3550 Columbus Road NE, in Canton.
The keynote speaker for the event is Marine Corps Maj. David J. Persons Jr.
Persons was raised in Suffield and graduated from the University of Akron.

Meth lab found
STOW: A pair of Stow residents face charges stemming from the discovery of the methamphetamine lab inside of a home.
Police were called to the 4000 block of Burton Drive around 4 p.m. Thursday to check on the welfare of residents living inside of the home.
Police say the homeowner let officers inside where they discovered a man and a woman in the smoke-filled basement that smelled of chemicals.
Officers found a makeshift meth lab. The fire department was called to help remove the smoke and fumes from the home.
Sarah M. Bimshas, 26, and Joseph D. Papp, 34, face charges including illegal manufacturing of drugs and illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs.
An 8-year-old child was removed from the home and placed in the custody of Summit County Children Services.

‘Obamacare’ forum
AKRON: The League of Women Voters of the Akron Area is sponsoring a panel discussion on the Affordable Care Act, which also is known as “Obamacare.”
Legal and medical experts also will answer audience questions as part of the program scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Unitarian Universalist Church, 3300 Morewood Road, Fairlawn.

WAYNE COUNTY
Party endorsement
COLUMBUS: The Wayne County Democratic Party has endorsed an amendment to legalize gay marriage in Ohio.
“We support this amendment because a loving couple should have the freedom to marry regardless of gender,” Betsy Sheets, the party’s chairwoman, said in a news release Thursday.
FreedomOhio, the group backing the amendment, is circulating petitions to get an amendment on the November ballot.
The amendment, if adopted by voters, would overturn the 2004 ban on same-sex marriage in Ohio.
Three local mayors have pledged their support for same-sex marriage, signing the Mayors Freedom to Marry Resolution: William Healy II of Canton, Sara Drew of Stow and Don Plusquellic of Akron.
