STATE NEWS

Gubernatorial plans

CLEVELAND: Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald said Monday he is forming an exploratory committee to consider a bid for governor in 2014.

With the move, FitzGerald, 44, becomes the first prospective challenger to make a move against Republican Gov. John Kasich.

FitzGerald said he’s concerned about the direction in which Kasich is taking the state.

“I believe Ohio has been let down by its leaders, especially a political establishment in state government who stopped listening to the people,” he said in making his announcement. “They’re more interested in scoring partisan points or taking care of the insiders than focusing on what’s best for the middle class.”

FitzGerald, 44, a former FBI agent and Lakewood mayor, was elected in 2010 to lead a new county executive-council government in Ohio’s most populous county to replace a scandal-plagued commissioner form of government.

Kasich has said he plans to run for a second term.

Rape-case motion

STEUBENVILLE: Attorneys for a high school football player facing rape accusations in Ohio are asking a judge to dismiss the case against him because they say the “unavailability of material witnesses” denies him his right to a fair trial.

A West Virginia judge last week rejected requests three juveniles be called to testify at the eastern Ohio trial of two high school football players charged with raping a 16-year-old girl. The girl is from West Virginia.

The juveniles’ testimony was expected to bolster the players’ defense against the charges.

Attorneys representing defendant Trent Mays on Monday filed a motion to dismiss, which was obtained by the Associated Press.

The two players go on trial Wednesday in Jefferson County Juvenile Court. Their attorneys have denied the charges.

70 mph proposed

COLUMBUS: An Ohio Senate panel is considering changes that would increase the state’s maximum speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph on interstate highways outside of urban areas.

The Senate Transportation Committee accepted the revisions to the state’s transportation budget Monday. The panel is expected to vote on it this week.

The proposal also would set the maximum speed limit for interstate freeway outerbelts in urban areas at 65 mph and on freeways in congested areas at 55 mph.

Among other changes, the budget bill now includes the governor’s plan to raise about $1.5 billion for state highway projects through Ohio Turnpike bonds. And an added amendment would make sure that at least 90 percent of the funds would be spend on projects within 75 miles of the turnpike.
