Jason Haas, president of the Akron Board of Education, hadn’t expected so many people to apply for Ginger Baylor’s empty board seat.

“A little more interest than I anticipated,” Haas said of the 16 resumes the board has already received.

The board gave Baylor a standing ovation and presented her with a plaque to thank her for her time and passion at Akron Public Schools on Monday night.

Baylor joined the board in November 2009. She stepped down March 4 to accept a coordinator position in U.S. Rep. Marcia L. Fudge’s soon-to-be Akron area office. She said she is “not abandoning her post in education” and would work with Fudge to bring opportunities to Akron.

“I am so blessed to have served with such a great group of people,” Baylor told the board after poking fun at board member Bruce Alexander for already moving into her chair, to which Alexander responded that he was “just keeping it warm.”

With the filing deadline to apply for her position set for Thursday, Haas already is planning interviews to begin Monday and spill over into Tuesday.

Applicants can email Haas at jhaas@akron.k12.oh.us or board secretary Marilyn Clackler at mclackle@akron.k12.oh.us, or they can send a letter and resume to the Sylvester Small Administration Building, 70 N. Broadway, Akron, OH 44308.
