Recycling rules
What residents can and can’t dispose in recycle carts in Akron:
Can recycle:
• Milk, juice, broth, soup and other beverage cartons.
• Plastics.
• Paper and cardboard (do not tie and bundle).
• Aluminum and other metal cans (labels are fine).
• Glass bottles and jars.
Can’t recycle:
• Styrofoam.
• Electronic waste (batteries, cellphones, computers, etc.).
• Used oil or oil containers.
• Window panes, mirrors, ceramics.
• Medical waste (syringes, needles).
• Electronic appliances.
• Auto parts.
• Hardware tools.
• Clothing.
• Carpet.
• Shoes.
• Garden hoses.
• Hangers.
• Light bulbs/fluorescent bulbs.
• Metal items.
• Railroad ties/spikes.
• Chains.
• Yard waste.
• Food waste.
• Trash.
How to recycle:
• Mix together recyclables, put them in a clear or blue plastic bag, and place the bag in the cart.
• Flatten cardboard boxes.
• Empty and rinse containers.
