Suspended University of Akron basketball player Alex Abreu made a brief court appearance Wednesday afternoon on felony drug charges.

Abreu, 21, has pleaded not guilty to trafficking in marijuana and possession of marijuana.

He and co-defendant Austin Lee Durgala, 18, were arrested last month after the two accepted delivery of a package containing 5 pounds of marijuana at Durgala’s residence, authorities said. Duragla has pleaded not guilty to charges of trafficking in drugs and drug abuse involving marijuana,

The package had been intercepted by authorities after a K-9 unit detected drugs.

Abreu appeared before Summit County Common Pleas Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands with his attorney, Robert C. Meeker. Neither commented in open court.

Meeker asked that the case be continued before the proceeding even began.

Abreu’s next court appearance is scheduled for 1 p.m. April 24.

After Abreu signed paperwork for the continuance, he and Meeker left court.

Outside the courtroom, Durgala met with his attorney Tom DiCaudo, a former chief assistant city prosecutor.

His case was also continued for three weeks and will be held at the same time as Abreu’s case.

Both men remain free on a $5,000 signature bond.
