A pipe organ concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the installation of the Schantz pipe organ is at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Church of Christ, 3909 Blackburn Road NW, Plain Township.
Four members of the congregation — David Carnell, Jo Ann Manning, Polly Micciche and Evan Blitz — will play the 4–manual, 62–rank organ. Music will include the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach and Toccata from Symphony V by Charles-Marie Widor. In addition to solo organ pieces, the concert will include duets for piano and organ and flute and organ.
The organ was introduced in a concert at the church on March 10, 1963, and has accompanied the choirs and congregation for 50 years. Built by the Schantz Organ Co. of Orrville, it is one of the largest organs in the area — containing 3,571 pipes that vary in size from three-eighths of an inch to 16 feet.
It is also unique because it also has two instruments — a chancel organ of 14 ranks of pipes playable on a two-manual console and a rear balcony organ of 48 ranks playable from a four-manual console.
