BARBERTON: Lake 8 Movie Theater in downtown Barberton will reopen Friday under the leadership of Neighborhood Development Services and operator Great Oaks Cinema of Wadsworth.
“The new Lake 8 Movies will provide moviegoers with a reorganized, clean, revamped and fresh theater, but it will have that small-town theater charm,” Mayor Bill Judge said in a statement.
The first movies to be screened have not been determined, but prices are known:
After 6 p.m. — $8 for adults (age 16 and older), $7 for juniors (ages 12 to 15), $6 for children (ages 3 to 11) and $5.50 for seniors (age 62 and older).
Before 6 p.m. — $6 for adults, juniors and children; $5.50 for seniors.
Tuesdays — $5 for all ages.
Children age 2 and younger are free.
There will be an additional charge of $2 for 3-D movies.
Neighborhood Development Services spent about $250,000 to install Sony digital projectors, including three 3-D screens, and to renovate the entryway. Customers now will purchase their tickets inside, although the historic marquee outside will remain unchanged.
The organization purchased the theater in February for $545,000 following failed negotiations between the city and the previous tenant, Phil Canfora.
“It was always my intention for the theater to be open,” Judge said. “We worked very hard at putting this deal together, and with the partnership between the city, NDS and Great Oaks, Barberton will once again have a theater in its downtown area.”
