Tour a fire station
AKRON: The Akron Fire Department has scheduled open houses at four stations Sunday as officials continue to mark Fire Prevention Month.
The stations open to guests from 1 to 4 p.m. are at 25 E. Thornton St., 2460 E. Market St., 1685 S. Hawkins Ave. and 541 E. Tallmadge Ave.
Tours will be given and light refreshments will be served.
Information on employment opportunities for Akron’s fire and police departments will be available.

Lone Star event
AKRON: The Lone Star Alumni Association will give a portion of the proceeds from its inaugural founder’s day event Saturday to the All-American Soap Box Derby.
The event will be from 6 to 11 p.m. at Todaro’s Party Center, 1820 Akron-Peninsula Road. Tickets are $100 per couple, which includes dinner, beverages and music for dancing, with $25 of each ticket going to the derby.
Pi Kappa Epsilon, the University of Akron fraternity commonly known as Lone Star, was founded in 1882.
“We are excited about celebrating the 130-year heritage of our great fraternity, while also supporting another legendary organization — the All-American Soap Box Derby,” event chairman Myron Fedeckyj said.
Joe Mazur, president and CEO of the derby, said the group appreciates the Lone Star’s help. He said this gives the derby the chance to educate a new audience about its program.

Parish race at park
AKRON: The St. Sebastian Parish Knights of Columbus will hold its second annual 5K Race Around the Park and Family Fun Run on Oct. 20.
Registration for the Family Fun Run and Walk is $10 for the family and will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the 5K Race Around the Park at 9:45 a.m.
Registration for the 5K Race Around the Park begins online today for $20 or participants can register on the day of the race for $25.
All events will begin in front of St. Sebastian Parish on Mull Avenue.
Event T-shirts and finishing awards will be given for 5K race winners.
Proceeds from the race will benefit the St. Sebastian Knights of Columbus.

COVENTRY TOWNSHIP
Man held in heist
COVENTRY TWP.: Summit County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 26-year-old Green man Tuesday on charges he held up a FirstMerit Bank in Coventry Township.
Deputies said Darrell Connell drove off when they tried to stop him on Arlington Street near Archwood Avenue.
Connell crashed his car, ran away and attempted to carjack another vehicle before the deputies caught up to him, authorities said.
The robbery was reported at 9:08 a.m. when a man entered the bank at 1411 S. Arlington St., said he had a gun and demanded money.
The robber got an undisclosed amount of money and escaped in a car, where a dye pack exploded on him.
GRANGER TOWNSHIP
Salt cost falling
GRANGER TWP.: The township, which buys its road salt through an Ohio Department of Transportation program, learned Monday that the cost this season will be the lowest since 2008.
This year’s contract with Cargill Inc. will be $38.20 per ton. Last year, salt from Morton cost for $47.88 per ton.
HUDSON
Police seek man
HUDSON: Authorities have released a photo of a man wanted in connection with two recent bank robberies.
Police are investigating an Oct. 2 armed robbery of the U.S. Bank branch at 125 N. Main St. in downtown Hudson. The robber showed a handgun but no shots were fired.
The man is also wanted in a bank robbery attempt Sept. 30 at the Huntington Bank in Chagrin Falls.
In that case, employees told the would-be robber that the teller was in the restroom, so he left without any money.
The man is described as white, about 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-9 tall with collar-length brown hair, about 38 to 42 years old.
In both incidents, he wore a Browns ball cap.

KENT STATE
KSU creates post
KENT: Said Sewell has been promoted to the newly created position of assistant provost for academic affairs at Kent State.
He will earn $152,250 a year.
Sewell has been director of See You at College, which trains adults who work with youth groups to advise high school students about college.
He joined Kent State in January as dean of undergraduate studies. He came to KSU from Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Ga.
Provost Todd Diacon said Sewell’s public speaking skills and experience in diversity matters “will boost our recruitment of diverse students and will help ensure their success once they reach the university.”
Appointment made
KENT: Kent State President Lester Lefton has appointed Cleveland-area trial lawyer José C. Feliciano as the 2012-2013 President’s Ambassador.
The one-year, part-time appointment brings local minority professionals to campus to share their knowledge and experience to address diversity issues.
Feliciano, who was born in Puerto Rico, became the first Hispanic public official in the history of Cleveland when he was named chief prosecuting attorney for the city in 1980.
In 1984, he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as a White House Fellow. He was recently inducted into the Cleveland Hall of Fame and was a founder of the Ohio Hispanic Bar Association.
He is host of a monthly talk show on El Sol Television that is produced by El Sol de Cleveland Hispanic newspaper. He has been an attorney for more than 35 years.
This is the third year that Kent State has appointed a Presidential Ambassador. They are paid $10,000 a year.
LAKE TOWNSHIP
Police win raises
LAKE TWP.: Township trustees on Monday approved pay raises to two members of the Uniontown Police Department.
Chief Harold Britt’s hourly rate was increased to $34.34 per hour, and Sgt. David Brown’s pay was increased to $28.28 per hour. Both raises are retroactive to April 1.
The board also hired Kristina Albrecht as a part-time police officer and accepted the resignation of Cory J. Kuzyk, who has accepted a full-time position with the Newburgh Heights Police Department.
Trustees also agreed to accept the Heritage Glen No. 3 allotment in its current state of completion, and not to pursue any claims against the developer, who is in bankruptcy.
The developer has not installed sidewalks, and the township has no plans to complete that work.
NORTH CANTON
New traffic signals
NORTH CANTON: Work to replace traffic signals, lighting and poles in the 1400 block of North Main Street began Tuesday afternoon.
The traffic lights control access to and from Kmart to the west and the Acme Fresh Market to the east.
Until the replacement is complete — expected about 7 p.m. today — stop signs will be in place, and motorists should treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
NORTHEAST OHIO
Bras across river
The annual Bras Across the Crooked River, sponsored by Celtic Club Fights Breast Cancer, will be on display across the Cuyahoga River in downtown Kent on Saturday.
A similar display will be seen in Stark County on Oct. 20, when bras are hung on the Cherry Street bridge and at Ernie’s Bike Shop along the Towpath Trail in Massillon.
The displays will begin at 9 a.m. and remain until dark.
