AKRON
Woman stabbed
AKRON: A 43-year-old Akron woman was attacked early Tuesday morning by a man who pushed her to the ground and tried to stab her during an attempted robbery, police said.
The woman was treated at Summa Akron City Hospital for scratches and bruises to her neck and abdomen. A suspect had not been identified.
Police interviewed the woman at the hospital, where she was taken by her boyfriend following the early morning attack near Iroquois and Laffer avenues in Goodyear Heights.
The woman said she left a Newton Street bar just after midnight and was walking when the man appeared and demanded money. When she told him she had no cash, the man became angry, pushed her to the ground and struck her several times, police said.
At one point, the man pulled out a knife and tried to stab the woman’s neck and abdomen, police said. She eventually freed herself, and the robber fled.
The woman called her boyfriend for help.
Robbery foiled
AKRON: Akron police detectives were reviewing surveillance video of a man’s attempt to rob a Brittain Road gas station early Tuesday morning.
A 31-year-old Circle K clerk told police the man came to the store’s secured service window about 1:30 a.m., pointed his finger to intimate he was armed and demanded cash. She said the man wore what appeared to be a woman’s fishnet stocking over his face.
The clerk told police she walked away from the window and called 911. She said the would-be robber then walked to a white Pontiac Grand Am and drove away.
A police report shows detectives were receiving a disc containing surveillance footage of the robbery attempt. It might contain images of the robber and his vehicle.

CANTON
Land purchased
CANTON: The Canton Service Center will have an additional 44.5 acres to store equipment and dump clean fill from Service Department operations.
The City Council approved the land purchase from Diano Realty Corp. for $436,988 on Monday.
The land is adjacent to both the Service Center on 30th Street Northeast and a water well field on Harrisburg Avenue Northeast.
In a letter to the council, Mayor William J. Healy II said the action would “protect and preserve this critical aquifer” from gas and oil exploration.
The property, between 25th and 30th streets, appraised at $11,000 an acre. The area includes 2.6 acres of dedicated road right-of-way.
Diano donated 5 percent of the value, or $23,000.
Sewer and water funds will pay for the land, which contractors associated with Diano businesses used as a dumping area.
The administration is seeking to buy another 4.1 acres in the same area after the seller supplies additional documents.
Summer jobs
CANTON: Summer jobs for youths are part of a $1.39 million plan to improve the city’s oldest and poorest neighborhoods.
The City Council approved the federally funded project Monday, including $200,000 for a Safe Summer Youth Employment Program.
Other projects include home repair for veterans and others, recreation facilities, facade improvements for businesses, neighborhood cleanups and improvements to sidewalks, street lights and streets.
The project area covers most of the city’s east side and parts of the northwest and southwest sections near downtown.
Money will come from the city Community Development Block Grant. The city received $2.4 million this year.

The cause is “isolated, but we still haven’t found it yet,” he said about 4 p.m. “We’re not sure if it is a transformer or an underground cable.”
