Derby Day was a win-win for participants and children at the 12th Annual Victory Gallop’s Kentucky Derby Gala on Saturday night at the Fairlawn Country Club.
The event provides scholarships for the therapeutic horseback riding program.
Deemer the horse greeted the 172 guests, who had their photo taken with the animal. Photographer Sam Miller and jockey volunteer Maria Nixon helped with the photos. Hannah Gustely sold raffle tickets.
“This year we have a new game called Manes and Tails, and the last one on the dance floor when we flip a coin for manes or tails in lieu of heads or tails wins $500,” Director of Victory Gallop Sue Miller said.
James Kline and Kelsey Herb sold wrist bands for a chance at the game. Oscar and Florice Frailey bought two bands.
The evening included dinner, dancing and a parade of hats, as well as betting on the Run for the Roses.
Spotted in the crowd were Beth Berno, Jacki and Frank Connolly, Chair Colleen Smith, Monty Iemma, Alan and Becky Falconer, and Nancy and Mark Roesner.
Jennifer Oakley judged the hats. First place winner was Susan Voth; second place, Susan Schueler; and third place, Nancy O’Dell. Winners won bouquets of roses.
Everyone had different strategies for picking their favorite horses in the race.
“I’m not sure which horse to bid on, but if there is a horse named Hobby I would probably bid on that one,” John Oakley said, laughing.
“I bet on number 13 since that is my daughter’s favorite number,” Mark Kasting said.
Wendy Kraft, who works in the gas drilling business said, “I’ll probably go with Frack Daddy.” Her friend Laurie Brown added, “I’m from Kentucky so I love this race.”
Tat Nagashima was the honorary guest and evening concert pianist.
Monica Jones said her son Luke has benefitted from the organization.
“Luke didn’t communicate much at first but because of his riding it really opened the door,” she said.
