AKRON

Hit-skip injures girl

AKRON: A 7-year-old Akron girl suffered a broken leg when a car struck her while she was running toward an ice cream truck.

The driver who hit the girl kept driving.

The girl was treated at Akron Children’s Hospital on Friday night for her injured leg, along with head and mouth injuries.

She was struck about 6 p.m. Friday in the 1200 block of Herman Street. Police said the girl “darted out into the roadway” and ran in front of a blue Chevrolet Malibu traveling southbound.

Anyone with information about the driver or vehicle is asked to contact the Akron Police Department Traffic Bureau at 330-375-2506.

Warrant issued

AKRON: An Akron man is wanted in connection with the shooting of another man Sunday night.

The victim, 26, is being treated for bullet wounds to his leg and buttocks.

The suspect, Walter L. Kirtland III, 31, of Akron, is named in an arrest warrant police have issued.

The victim said he was in his bedroom about 8:30 p.m. when Kirtland appeared and shouted: “Give it up.”

Kirtland then fired two shots, police said.

Attempted robbery

AKRON: A man climbed inside a woman’s car Friday afternoon and tried to force her to drive during a robbery attempt, Akron police said.

The Springfield Township woman, 24, was not injured, and the would-be robber eventually fled without taking any money.

Akron police said Monday they have made an arrest in the case.

Frank O. Dimenna, 23, whom police say is homeless, is charged with aggravated robbery. He was being held in the Summit County Jail pending an initial court appearance.

The woman was stopped at a traffic light at East Market and South Forge streets about 2 p.m. Friday when Dimenna got inside, police said. He told the driver he was armed and wanted money. No gun was seen.

The woman drove into a pizza shop parking lot and told him she had no cash. She refused his demands to go to an ATM, and he eventually left the car.

Reward offered

AKRON: A $2,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the capture of Randy A. Thomas, a suspect in an Akron murder.

Smith, 21, died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Thomas is wanted on a charge of aggravated murder.

Summit County Crimestoppers Inc. is offering the reward for information that directly leads to the arrest of Thomas.

SUMMIT COUNTY

Mosquito spraying

BARBERTON: The Mosquito Abatement District will begin spraying June 13 in Norton and continue every other Thursday until Sept. 19.

The schedule for Barberton will begin June 20 and continue every other Thursday until Sept. 26.

If spraying cannot be done on the scheduled date, it will be rescheduled for the following Monday, weather permitting.

Because July 4 falls on a Thursday, spraying that week will be conducted July 2.

Spraying will be completed in accordance with all applicable laws, rules and proposed EPA regulations, when there is no rain and winds are less than 10 mph.

If surveillance traps contain fewer than 10 mosquitoes, spraying might be canceled for a specific ward.

For more information, call 330-848-2623 or email mosquito
