Several Akron-area Girl Scouts were among 85 in Northeast Ohio to receive the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting.
Winners were: Karli Chiavaroli, Louisville; Dana Cressman and Allison Reed, North Canton; Robyn King, Hartville; Janice Richards, Clinton; Sarah Schlosser, Uniontown; Katie Farinacci, Sagamore Hills; Rebecca Angell, Macedonia; Katie Benya and Tia Mixell, Wadsworth; Emma Fobean and Amanda Wisniewski, Stow; Kirsten Glas and Kristen Osborne, Norton; and Laura Leventhal, Akron.
George R. Shrader of Akron and Robert C. Krosnick of Barberton were presented with Meritorious Service Awards at the Ohio Council of Deliberation, the annual state convention of Scottish Rite Masons, held in Toledo in June. It recognizes exceptional service and is the highest honor that the council can bestow.
Education
Elizabeth M. Crookston, daughter of Daniel and Karen Crookston of Clinton, received the College Chemistry Award from the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh. She is a senior at the University of Akron.
Troy A. Becker, son of Dale and Carol Becker of Akron, was a member of the Psi Chi psychology honorary and the Phi Eta Sigma scholastic honorary at Ohio Northern University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He is a graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School. Michael A. Horth, son of David and Marilyn Horth of Akron, was a member of Phi Eta Sigma at ONU, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He also is a graduate of Hoban High. Cortney M. Mospan, daughter of Pamela Phillips of Rittman and Douglas Phillips of Willard, was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary, Phi Lambda Sigma pharmacy honorary and the Rho Chi Society pharmacy honorary at ONU, where she earned a doctorate in pharmacy. She is a graduate of Manchester High.
Graduating Woodridge High senior Angela Debord received the Sally Russell Scholarship from the members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cuyahoga Falls. The award is in memory of the St. Paul’s member who died in 2007. Debord plans to attend the University of Akron to study forensic accounting. Other students to receive scholarships from St. Paul’s were: Sarah Farrance of Cuyahoga Falls High, who will study pre-med at Kent State; Woodridge High’s Rich Vineyard, who will study engineering at UA; and Copley High’s Paige Myers, who will study biology at Case Western Reserve University.
Vincent Scaia, son of Steve and Susan Scaia of Akron, received the Outstanding Senior in Honors award and the Outstanding Senior in Biology award when he graduated from Walsh University this spring with a bachelor’s degree. He is pursuing a doctor of physical therapy degree at Walsh.
Joe Doll of Green received a merit award that will pay for about a year and a half of his law education at Rutgers University. He graduated from Ohio State with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2013 and from Green High School in 2009.
Madison A. Hollingsworth of Akron received a $1,400 Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded in partnership between Summit Mall and Simon Youth Foundation, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational and career development opportunities to youth. Hollingsworth will study pre-law at Baldwin Wallace University this fall.
