CUYAHOGA FALLS: The Cuyahoga Falls City Council will vote tonight on building plans for a Cinemark movie theater and a Giant Eagle that will anchor the long-anticipated Portage Crossing development.

Council members heard details of the plans from Falls Planning Director Fred Guerra last week.

The grocery store will be just over 92,600 square feet and will anchor the south side of the retail complex. The theater will anchor the north side and encompass more than 34,500 square feet.

The council approved plans for the buildings that will face Portage Trail on June 3.

Sale of the former State Road Shopping Center land from the city to the developer Stark Enterprises is expected to close within a few weeks.

Redeveloping the corner of State Road and Portage Trail has been in the works since the city bought the aging State Road Shopping Center for $10 million in 2008.

Stark Enterprises, developer of several area retail centers including The Strip in Jackson Township and Crocker Park in Westlake, has been under contract with the city to purchase and develop the land since 2010.

It now looks like the promised fall start of the project will become a reality.

“We still expect to break ground in August,” said Steve Rubin, Stark Enterprises Chief Operating Officer.

Portage Crossing is expected to open in the fall of 2014.
