Police seek man
AKRON: An Akron man is wanted on domestic violence and cruelty to animal charges stemming from a July 4 incident outside his home.
Patrick Palmer, 28, is accused of assaulting his girlfriend on Rexford Street by kicking, choking and shoving her into a van parked outside the home, police said. During the assault, police say Palmer picked up a kitten, broke its neck and then tossed the dead animal at the woman. Several children witnessed the assault, police said.
Palmer fled before police arrived and arrest warrants were issued.

Ward meetings
AKRON: Two Akron council members will have ward meetings in the next two weeks.
Garry Moneypenny, the council president who represents Ward 10, will have a meeting at 6:30 p.m. today at the Goodyear library branch, 60 Goodyear Blvd.
Akron police officers will discuss burglary prevention.
Jim Hurley, the Ward 1 councilman, will have a meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 17 at Patterson Park Community Center, 800 Patterson Ave.
The topic will be the city’s massive sewer project.
Road closure
AKRON: East Wilbeth Road between Dallas Avenue and South Main Street will be closed to through traffic for road reconstruction beginning Wednesday.
It will be closed for three weeks.
Access to all driveways will be maintained up to the closure.
Detours will be posted.
COLUMBUS
Revenue down
COLUMBUS: The summer vacation season began badly for Ohio’s four casinos.
All four casinos saw their revenues drop in June, with revenues at the Horseshoe Cincinnati down the most at 10 percent. The Cincinnati casino was hurt by lower revenue from both slot machines and table games.
Revenues were off more than 3 percent at both the Cleveland and Toledo casinos and down 1.5 percent at Hollywood Columbus.
Casino revenues statewide in June were $68.6 million. That was the least in the four full months with all four Ohio casinos open and was down nearly 5 percent from May.
The casinos began opening last year under a voter-approved plan meant to create jobs and spur development. Cincinnati’s casino, the newest, opened in February.

CUYAHOGA FALLS
Dam removal
CUYAHOGA FALLS: Work on removing the Sheraton Mill Dam on the Cuyahoga River is scheduled to begin between 9 and 11 a.m. today.
The initial test cuts, initial hammering and vibration monitoring will commence, the city of Cuyahoga Falls said Monday, weather permitting.
If the tests are successful, the full demolition then would commence, the city said.
The removal of the dam has been delayed by high water in the river due to heavy thunderstorms that have occurred over the past several days.
The LaFever Powerhouse Dam also will be removed.
The city received $1 million from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to remove the two dams to improve water quality in the river.

Meeting canceled
NORTON: City Council canceled its Monday meeting a few hours before the scheduled 7 p.m. start, citing a technical issue with audio-video equipment.
Under the city’s charter, all meetings must be televised live.
The meeting has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. July 15.
PORTAGE COUNTY
Shared expenses
ATWATER TWP: Waterloo and Field school officials have invited the public, Ohio Auditor of State Dave Yost and Portage County Auditor Janet Esposito to attend a board meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday to discuss cost reduction measures through shared services.
While a previous attempt to share a superintendent had failed, the two Portage County school districts have recently entered an agreement to curb expenses by sharing Waterloo Treasurer Todd Carpenter.
STOW
Arsonist sought
STOW: Stow police are offering a reward for the identity of the person who fired a flare into a Mac Drive apartment late on the Fourth of July.
No one was injured, and the smoke and fire damage was confined to one unit inside the complex in the 1400 block of Mac Drive. The resident was forced out of the unit and spent the night at a hotel.
The incident happened about 11:20 p.m., when the resident returned and noticed a broken window. She called police, believing her apartment was burglarized, police said.
An officer investigating the window damage noticed the room filling with smoke and extinguished a clothes basket. Police say a flare was used at close range to ignite the fire.

SUMMIT COUNTY
Deputy arrested
YOUNGSTOWN: A Summit County sheriff’s deputy faces charges of marijuana abuse and failing to display a front license plate, according to online court records.
Darrell Joy, 41, was stopped by Youngstown police while driving a 2001 Jaguar Saturday night at Market Street and Dewey Avenue. Police confiscated two small plastic bags of marijuana, a loaded .45-caliber firearm and his deputy identification and badge, the Youngstown Vindicator reported.
The marijuana charge is a first-degree misdemeanor.
Joy had been off work for more than a year due to an injury, the newspaper said. Sheriff’s officials could not be reached for comment Monday.
Joy’s case in Youngstown Municipal Court was set for a pretrial hearing on Aug. 9.
Library book sale
FAIRLAWN: Friends of the Fairlawn-Bath Library will hold its second “mini book sale” of the summer from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 19 at the library, 3103 Smith Road, across from Summit Mall.
Featured in this sale will be biographies, politics, gardening, classics, how-to books, adult fiction and children’s fiction. DVDs and CDs will also be available.
Proceeds will help the friends group support the facility.
Town hall meeting
BARBERTON: State Rep. Zack Milkovich, D-Akron, will host a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Barberton Active Adult Center, 500 W. Hopocan Ave.
Topics of discussion will include the recently passed state operating budget.
The public is invited.
