Gwendolyn Loree Szeligo was named to the International Dean’s List Society. She is studying nursing and philosophy at the University of Akron.
LaTasha Head and Emily Walker, both graduates of Akron’s Early College High School, have been awarded the Charles L. Warren Memorial Heritage Scholarships from the Ohio Association for College Admission Counseling. Head will attend Kent State and Walker, the College of Wooster.
Three students received $1,000 scholarships from the Sharon Women’s Club: Highland High graduate David Back, who will study mechanical engineering at the University of Akron; Highland High graduate Caitlyn Hydel, who will study agronomy and agriculture at the Ohio State University’s Agricultural Technical Institute; and Medina County Career Center graduate Thomas Kennedy, who will study information technology and business at UA.
Kent State senior Lauren Romick of Stow received a $3,000 first-place honor as the 2013 Scholarship Day award recipient from the Ohio Society of CPAs. She is an accounting major.
Yale University student Micah Johnson of Canton is one of three Ohio residents to be selected for the highly competitive White House internship program this summer.
Jimmy A. Noriega, assistant professor of theater and dance at the College of Wooster, received the Elliott Hayes Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dramaturgy at the 2013 Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas Conference in Vancouver, Canada. Noriega was chosen for his work on Elaine Romero’s Mother of Exiles at Cornell University. He was invited to join the production team because of his expertise in Latina and Latino theater and his knowledge of immigration and border issues.
Military
Air Force Airman Anthony L. Brown, brother of Shayla Brown of Cleveland, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio. He is a 2009 graduate of Copley High School.
Army Pvt. Madison P. Turley, daughter of Robert and Jennifer Turley of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is a 2012 graduate of Ellet High School in Akron.
Air Force Reserve Airman Marvin R. Grandison Jr., son of Germaine Grandison and Marvin Grandison Sr., both of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. He is a 2003 graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School and a 2007 graduate of the College of Wooster.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Nia S. Crews, daughter of Meredith Johnson of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. She is a 2011 graduate of Akron Early College High School.
Army Pfc. Nicholas C. Pagni, son of Mark Pagni and Kelly Pagni, both of Cuyahoga Falls, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2009 graduate of Akron St.-Vincent-St. Mary High School.
