TALLMADGE: Rides, games, farm animals and protesters.

Those who frequent the Summit County Fair this week might notice protesters outside the fairgrounds as they walk inside for the festivities.

Local citizens and clergy will gather daily to call on the fairgrounds to require background checks for all gun sales at the venue’s frequent gun shows. The protests will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today through Sunday.

Polling consistently shows that Ohioans overwhelmingly support background checks for gun purchases, according to ProgressOhio, which helped organize the protests along with the Summit County Progressive Democrats.

According to the FBI, the federal background check system has prevented more than 1 million prohibited gun purchases, despite a provision that allows people to avoid background checks by attending gun shows like those at the Summit County Fairgrounds, ProgressOhio said in a news release.
