Mark your calendar for Aug. 18 for what promises to be a fun-filled event for a worthy cause.
“Retro Dog 9 (a Cuyahoga Falls drive-in restaurant) and Rubber City Rollergirls have come together to support The Up Side of Downs of Northeast Ohio. From noon to 3 p.m. the Rollergirls will be on all eight wheels serving up hot dogs and suds to Retro Dog customers,” wrote Jon A. Fiume, vice president of retail operations of Ritzman Pharmacies and an advocate for The Up Side of Downs. “Of course games and fun will be part of the afternoon as well.”
Five percent of food proceeds go to The Up Side of Downs and 10 percent to the Rollergirls roller derby team’s foundation that benefits women and children.
The Up Side of Downs of Northeast Ohio is a nonprofit that serves more than 900 families and hundreds of educators and medical professionals throughout the region, Fiume noted, adding, “The Up Side of Downs envisions a community where people with Down syndrome have limitless opportunities and the ability to pursue their dreams.”
Retro Dog is located at 350 E. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls.
Blood drive for band
The Cuyahoga Falls Instrumental Music Patrons will be hosting a “Bleed for the Band” community blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the high school, 2300 Fourth St., Cuyahoga Falls.

Leonora Hall benefit
Daughters of Divine Charity and the Leonora Hall auxiliary board are hosting their annual fundraiser from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 9 to benefit Leonora Hall, which serves women of all ages with mental and developmental disabilities in an integrated setting with women without disabilities. The home is located at 39 N. Portage Path, Akron.
The fundraiser will be held at the Fairlawn Country Club with hors d’oeuvres, California wines and heavenly desserts by Sister Matilda and her staff. Chef Gala to aid autism
Autism Speaks — a leading autism science and advocacy organization — is sponsoring “Cleveland Chef Gala,” a large-scale culinary extravaganza, on Aug. 10, with Michael Symon of Iron Chef America and The Chew as host.
The event will showcase Cleveland chefs preparing their signature dishes to raise funds for families and individuals affected by autism.
Participants, in addition to Symon, include: Rocco Whalen, Fahrenheit and Rosie and Rocco’s; Eric Williams, Momocho; Chris Hodgson, Hodges; Brian Doyle, Sow Food and Beachland Ballroom; Jonathon Sawyer, Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat; Matt Mytro, Flour; Brandt Evans, Pura Vida and Blue Canyon; Jonathan Bennett, Red; Britt-Marie Culey, Coquette Patisserie; and John Selick, University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center.

Night at the Races benefit
Pregnancy Care of Summit County is sponsoring its fifth annual “A Night at the Races” benefit at 5 p.m. Aug. 17 at Knights of Columbus hall, 2055 Glenmount Ave., Akron. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m. and is followed by races at 6:30 p.m.
Pregnancy Care of Summit County is a nonprofit whose mission is “serving women, families and children in the community,” writes special events coordinator Shannon E. Collins. “Our services include material goods, emotional support, emergency food assistance and educational programming.”

Nurses hold 50th reunion
St. Thomas Hospital’s School of Nursing Class of 1963 will celebrate its 50th reunion 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at Akron’s O’Neil House.
“Forty-one graduated in one of the last all-women classes to live dormitory-style at the school as we received our three years of training,” Akron’s Mary Ellen Reymann shared. “Five classmates are deceased, and 36 live in nine states, with 23 in Ohio … We have worked in hospitals, industry, health departments, physician offices, education, rehabilitation, skilled nursing facilities, staffing agencies, management, surgery centers, managed care and community services. Most are retired but four are still working … We have experience in various fields: staff nurse, patient assessment, endoscopy, gerontology, mental health, critical care, pediatrics, staff education, obstetrics, Ask-A-Nurse, burn care, orthopedics, pregnancy care, occupational heath, emergency/urgent care, massage therapy, school nursing, supervision, director of nursing and even a clown nurse!”

Lions Club boosts safety
Major kudos to the Stow-Munroe Falls Lions Club which is introducing a new community project, “Adopt a Classroom — With a Safety Bucket!” in time for the start of the school year.
This letter from Lion Marty Dennis, president, explains: “In the past few years, school safety has become a serious concern. This new community project will provide a five-gallon plastic bucket to every classroom within the Stow-Munroe Falls communities filled with medical supplies and tools for the teachers to use in the event of an emergency. The purpose of the Safety Bucket is to provide immediate assistance to our schoolchildren before safety responders arrive.”
