CLEVELAND
Guilty plea
CLEVELAND: A 50-year-old Akron man was sentenced to 10 to 25 years in prison on Monday for a 1989 cold case involving the murder of a Maple Heights man.
Eric Register pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the murder of Armond Earl, according to a news release from the Cuyahoga County Prosecutors’ Office.
Earl was found dead in his Lee Road apartment on July 19, 1989. He sustained four wounds, two to the forehead and two to the chest. The injuries were believed to have been made by a screwdriver.
Over the years police preserved a bathtub drain, a bloody screwdriver and a bloody fingerprint impression from a fan.
The case was reopened in February 2010.
The cold-case unit of the prosecutor’s office asked the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to determine if any fingerprints in its system matched the bloody fingerprint.
The prints matched Register’s, who at the time of the discovery was in Summit County Jail for sexual assault and gross sexual imposition of a 7-year-old girl.
The blood found on the screwdriver belonged to both Earl and Register.
Register was charged with murder in November.

The system allows residents to map the incidents and look at what type of incidents are happening in their neighborhoods.
“We provide dispatch services for and collaborate with Montville Police and Medina Township Police. By using a single computer-aided dispatch system and police electronic records system, we are able to offer this benefit to their communities at no cost,” said Medina Chief Patrick Berarducci.
