Larry Lallo, executive director of the Barberton Community Foundation, will resign Feb. 15 to lead a religious charity he helped found.

Lallo became director of the foundation in 2010, taking over for Marty Bodnar who resigned after one day amid public outcry about his $125,000 salary.

Lallo began with an $89,000 salary. He previously served 20 years as executive director of the Barberton Community Development Corp.

In February, he will direct the Mercy Economic Development International Corp., a Summit County charity he founded 10 years ago.

“The organization, operating in 10 nations, is facing a need to stabilize, grow to sustainability and reach out to those marginalized from economic opportunity,” Lallo said in a news release Friday.

“It is a work that reaches the poor through sustainable micro business finance opportunities, educational sponsorships and Christian-based training that restores dignity and gives hope for the future,” he added.

The foundation’s board said it will begin searching for a new director soon.
