Dr. Lu David Wims, Akron native was athlete, coach, administrator

Services were on Friday for Dr. Lu David Wims, an Akron native who was one of the best athletes ever at the College of Wooster.

Mr. Wims, 75, of Cleveland, died on Aug. 31.

He was a graduate of Akron’s old South High School, where he excelled in basketball, football and track.

From 1957-1961, he was at Wooster, where he was twice named to the All-Ohio Conference football team, was a second-team pick in basketball and excelled at the shot put and discus in track.

He earned four letters in all three sports at Wooster.

He signed as a defensive end with the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League. He was 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighed 235 pounds.

He is a member of the College of Wooster Hall of Fame, the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame and the Central State University Hall of Fame.

After graduation, Mr. Wims was an assistant coach in all three sports for two years at Wooster.

He served as track coach and assistant basketball and football coach at Winston-Salem College in North Carolina.

In 1969, he returned to Akron and coached at South and Kenmore high schools while earning a master’s degree from Kent State University. The South basketball team won a City Series championship under his coaching.

He then returned to Wooster to teach and serve as an administrator in the 1970s. From 1983 to 1987, he was the head coach of the Fighting Scots’ men’s basketball team.

He also coached and served as an administrator at Central State University in southwest Ohio.

He earned his doctorate at Ohio State University.

He served as principal at Warrensville Heights Middle School.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Woods Wims; son, David C. Wims; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements were handled by Boyd & Son funeral home in Cleveland.
