CANTON

Firefighter killed

CANTON: Police detectives continue to investigate Thursday’s shooting death of 68-year-old retired Canton firefighter Harry H. Cavitt Jr.

His 49-year-old wife, Tamace Yvette Cavitt, has been charged in the crime. She is being held on a $2 million bond in the Stark County Jail.

Police said it was Tamace Cavitt who summoned police at about 3:40 p.m. Thursday to the couple’s home in the 300 block of Fenton Avenue NE.

Police say they believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic situation that happened earlier that morning. It is believed that Harry Cavitt was shot in the head with his own weapon. He was dead at the scene.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Canton police detective bureau at 330-489-3144.

Two dead in Salem

SALEM: Authorities are investigating an apparent murder-suicide involving an estranged couple found shot to death in a Walmart employee parking lot.

Police in Salem, located southwest of Youngstown, say the man shot and killed his former girlfriend about 2:40 a.m. Sunday in the employee parking lot and then killed himself. A handgun was found near his body.

The names of the two weren’t immediately released.

Detective Dave Talbert told the Salem News that the woman was on a work break when the man approached and shot her and then himself. There apparently were several witnesses to the shootings.

The Columbiana County coroner’s office said no update was available.

Cedar Point wins

SANDUSKY: Cedar Point amusement park and resort in Sandusky has reason to have its proverbial head in the clouds these days, having captured for the 16th consecutive year the “Best Amusement Park in the World!” honors.

The announcement came Saturday at the annual Golden Ticket Awards ceremony — the equivalent of the industry’s Oscars — in Santa Cruz, Calif. Cedar Point has earned the top honor every year since the inception of the Golden Ticket Awards in 1998.

Cedar Point’s Millennium Force roller coaster also was named the “Best Steel Roller Coaster in the World” for three years running. Since its debut 13 years ago, the Millennium Force has been ranked each year as one of the top two steel roller coasters in the world.

Winners were tapped by votes from amusement park enthusiasts from around the world.

“The award is a testament to our entire staff here at Cedar Point that strives to provide each guest with their ‘best day’ experience during every visit,” said John Hildebrandt, the park’s vice president and general manager.
