CLEVELAND: Federal civil rights observers will monitor polls in a Northeast Ohio county during the upcoming primary election to make sure bilingual ballots are used under a 2010 agreement between the U.S. Department of Justice and the locality.

Observers today will record activities at the polls in Cuyahoga County, according to a news release.

This is not the first time elections in that county are monitored.

The media group reports the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections in 2010 agreed to offer bilingual ballots to avoid a Justice Department lawsuit under the Civil Rights Act.

The department had been pressuring the county to provide voting access for citizens educated in Puerto Rico and with limited ability in English.

Justice Department personnel will also monitor polling activities in Queens County in New York.
