AKRON

Man shot in torso

AKRON: Police are investigating an early morning shooting in South Akron.

The victim, 33, underwent surgery Thursday afternoon after being shot in the torso. His condition was not available.

Police said the man was found on South Main Street near Palmetto Avenue about 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

It was not immediately known where the shooting took place, police said.

Bullet hits shoulder

AKRON: A 33-year-old Akron man was shot after he refused a robber’s demands to surrender his backpack.

Authorities said the man suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Police had no suspect.

The man told investigators that he was inside a car on Norma Avenue about 4 p.m. Wednesday when a gunman approached and demanded the backpack. The man refused and was shot.

I-76 truck overturns

AKRON: A truck accident closed the ramp from eastbound Interstate 76/U.S. 224 to the northbound Kenmore leg of the Akron Expressway for several hours Thursday.

A tractor-trailer went off the ramp and its trailer overturned. There were no reports of serious injuries.

CANTON

Safety grant issued

CANTON: The Canton Fire Department has been awarded a $64,008 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The grant program supports projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office said in announcing the funds.

The main goal is to reach high-risk populations and reduce injuries and prevent deaths.

GRANGER TOWNSHIP

Cul-de-sac concern

GRANGER TWP.: Trustees heard a request Wednesday from Jeff and Christine Smith that the board allow Brenelle Lane to stay a cul-de-sac permanently.

The lane ends in a temporary cul-de-sac that could be connected to a future road extension going toward Medina Line Road.

The Smiths said they want to purchase 8.5 acres at the end of Brenelle and have the support of other residents on the lane who also favor the permanent cul-de-sac.

Trustees tabled the issue until their Oct. 14 meeting so they could consider the topography and discuss the matter with the zoning commission.

In other action, trustees accepted the bid for a snowplow from Chuck’s Custom Truck and Trailer of Medina for $47,490.

The plow will be used on the new Chevrolet truck the township purchased and received in June to clear township parking lots and cul-de-sacs.

MEDINA

Scammers at door

MEDINA: Medina police are warning residents to be cautious when dealing with solicitors who peddle their wares door to door.

In late August, a group of solicitors was selling magazine subscriptions in the city, police said.

“Some of these solicitors had sticky fingers and distracted an elderly resident while another stole the resident’s wallet,” police said in a news release. “These suspects have committed similar offenses in other jurisdictions as well.”

Authorities say they have suspects in the case and charges are pending.

If you suspect that you may also be a victim, call 330 725-7777 to file a report.

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP

Gun near school

SPRINGFIELD TWP.: A domestic quarrel in the parking lot of Young Elementary School ended with the arrest of a 48-year-old man on gun possession charges.

Craig Alan Jenkins of Mogadore was charged with illegal conveyance of a weapon on school grounds, a felony of the fifth degree. Police said the incident was related to “a child custody issue and took place while the child was being dropped off at the school” at 8:40 a.m. Thursday.

Police found that Jenkins had two loaded handguns in his car.

The police news release said “there is currently no evidence to support that the weapons were ever brought into the school building or that there were any threats made involving the weapons.”
