In a vaguely worded statement late Wednesday, Hudson officials announced that the city manager “has reached a mutually agreed upon separation of employment with the city.”

Anthony Bales had been city manager since 2006, taking the post a year after being hired as a deputy city manager.

“Tony became city manager during a challenging time of belt tightening and restrictions for the City,” Hudson Council President Dave Basil said in the statement. “We appreciate his service to the community and wish him well. We have a solid team of professionals in place serving the citizens of Hudson and we expect their excellent work to go on without interruption during this transition.”

Reached late Wednesday, Bales said he had no comment.

Basil did not return a phone call seeking further explanation.

Scott Schroyer, assistant city manager for the past two years, will serve in the interim while council conducts a search for Bales’ replacement.

Basil said the search will begin immediately, and the city hopes to have a new manager in place by spring.

Schroyer, a Hudson High School graduate, has worked for the city for nearly 30 years in a variety of roles.

He joined the service division in 1985 and later became acting public works director, assistant public works director and public works superintendent. More recently, Schroyer led the development of the city’s current long-range strategic plan.
