Thelma Greaser received the Susan J. Sears Counselor of the Year Award from the Ohio Counseling Association. She retired this month as clinical manager, internship coordinator and senior clinical consultant for trauma from Child Guidance and Family Solutions of Akron.

John Saros, executive director of Summit County Children Services, received the William P. Kannel Child Advocate of the Year Award from the Summit County CASA/GAL. The program aims to provide a trained volunteer to help advocate for every child who enters the court system as a result of allegations of abuse, neglect or dependency.

At the 51st annual All-Ohio Days Convention of the 82nd Airborne Association in Hudson this fall, Robert Winkler of Rootstown Township was elected chairman of the Akron chapter; Wayne Noall of Westfield Center, treasurer; and Jim Harris of Ravenna Township, vice president.

Education

FirstEnergy Corp. awarded grants of up to $500 each to 21 Ohio teachers for science, technology, engineering and math projects and workshops. Akron-area winners were: Debbie Dodson, the Greater Summit County Early Learning Center, Akron; Samantha Dunaway, SCOPE Academy, Akron; Nechelle M. Grant, Delta Academy, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Akron; Lisa Kimevski, Turkeyfoot Elementary School, Coventry; Elizabeth Terrill, Buchtel Community Learning Center, Akron; and Grace Tome, Ritzman Community Learning Center, Akron.

New appointments to the Hiram College Board of Trustees are: David Carr of Chagrin Falls, president of Brennan Industries Inc.; F. David Coleman of Newark, N.J., director of officiating for the National Football League; James Malz of Brecksville, president of the Northeast Ohio region of JPMorgan Chase; and Bruce Shylo of Springfield, chief operating officer of the Shylo Group.

The Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies selected Kent State physics professor Satyendra Kumar to receive the Distinguished Award of Council. The purpose of the award, given annually since 1959, is to recognize an outstanding Akron-area citizen for his or her involvement in civic activities, as well as technical and managerial abilities.

Military

Air Force Airman Alex Fausnight, grandson of Harold Oseroff of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio. He is a 2012 graduate of Western Reserve Academy, Hudson.

Air Force Reserve Airman Erica L. Tarver, daughter of Sharon Tarver of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio. She is a 2003 graduate of Central-Hower High School, Akron.

Charles Malachosky, 92, of Cuyahoga Falls, was awarded the French Legion of Honor Medal for his service in the U.S. Army in World War II. He landed in France July 26, 1944, and took part in four European campaigns that included the Battle of the Bulge with the 5th Armored Division.

Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Lashonta T. Hodges, daughter of Lenon Hodges of Akron and Theresa Dobbins of Black Lick, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio. She is a 2006 graduate of Pickerington High School Central and a 2011 graduate of Wright State University.

Navy Seamen Alec Feeman, son of James Feeman of Akron and Cheryl Gates of Hudson, graduated from basic recruit training at Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois. He is a 2012 graduate of Hudson High School.
