Two Akron teens are accused of leading police on a chase that ended on the steps of a South Arlington Street church.

The boys, 14 and 15, were being treated at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Police said the chase started when officers saw the teens inside a stolen 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer about 3 a.m. Monday near South Arlington Street and East Wilbeth Road.

Officers tried to stop the SUV, but the Trailblazer ran the red light and continued north on South Arlington Street at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle went out of control and crashed into the steps of Hills Temple Church, at 799 S. Arlington St. The teens fled on foot, police said, but were caught a short time later.

The church sustained damage to the steps and outer walls. A nearby business reported a damaged fence.

Police said the SUV was taken during an armed robbery about 7 p.m. Sunday at Princeton and West South streets. The robbery remains under investigation.

So far, the teens are accused of receiving stolen property, obstructing official business and failure to comply with police orders.
