AKRON

Man robbed, shot

AKRON: Akron police are looking for two robbers who stole $61 from a man and shot him in the foot.

Authorities say a 28-year-old Akron man told them the incident occurred about 8 p.m. Friday at West Cuyahoga Falls and Shelby avenues.

He was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital for treatment.

While investigating the robbery, officers stopped a potential suspect at North Main Street and East Tallmadge Avenue.

When approached, the man told officers that he had a loaded, sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun hidden in his pants.

Officers determined that Matias R. Martin, 22, of Cleveland, was not a part of the robbery. He was charged with having a weapon under disability, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of an unlawful or dangerous ordnance.

Drive-by shooting

AKRON: Akron police are investigating a drive-by shooting that left a city man wounded.

Police say someone fired multiple shots about 8 p.m. Friday at a home in the 900 block of Baughman Street.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the buttocks. He was treated at Akron General Medical Center.

Cabbie robbed

AKRON: An Akron cabdriver reported to police that he was robbed Saturday afternoon.

The cabdriver told police that he was parked in the 1100 block of South Main Street about 3 p.m., when a man approached with a gun and demanded his money and belongings.

The victim told officers that he had just finished washing his taxi when he was robbed.

Life Ride campaign

AKRON: Life Ride, a campaign for free cab rides home, is now available from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. every day through Jan. 1.

The rides are provided by City Yellow Cab Co. and are meant for people who have been drinking and are not able to drive themselves home.

All Life Ride passengers must present a valid driver’s license or other proof of home address. The free rides are to the person’s home only and are limited to one person.

GREEN SCHOOLS

Meeting scheduled

GREEN: The Board of Education has changed its first scheduled meeting of 2013.

Treasurer Eydie Snowberger said Monday the board will hold its organizational meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 7, immediately preceding its first regular meeting of the new calendar year.

Both meetings will be held in City Council chambers of the city’s Central Administration Building, 1755 Town Park Blvd.

Libraries to close

CANTON: All Stark County District Library branches and bookmobiles will be closed Dec. 23-25 and Dec. 30-Jan. 1 in celebration of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

SUMMIT COUNTY

Joint program

GREEN: Representatives of the U.S. Army and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office will sign an agreement this morning to provide priority hiring status to qualified soldiers participating in the Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS) program.

PaYS is a partnership between the Army and more than 460 corporations and public-sector agencies.

After completing military obligations, participating soldiers coordinate with the PaYS partner they selected upon enlistment and are entitled to an interview with that company if openings exist.

“We look forward to working with the Army on this program. It will bring quality candidates to our agency and support the troops that have served our country,” Sheriff Drew Alexander said in a prepared statement.

UNIVERSITY OF AKRON

Money for roof

COLUMBUS: The Ohio Controlling Board on Monday approved a $725,000 roof replacement project at the University of Akron.

Roofs will be replaced on the South, West and North Towers of the Auburn Science and Engineering Center, a complete tear-off of the existing structure.

The roofs are failing and leaking, the university said.
