AKRON

Standoff at house

AKRON: University of Akron and city of Akron police officers responded to an altercation at a house on Allyn Street early Saturday.

Upon arriving, a 19-year-old male pushed a UA officer and locked himself inside a home. The suspect was arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail.

A UA spokesperson was unable to give more details, but witnesses said people in two different houses were fighting, alcohol was involved, and tear gas was used to get the suspect out of the home.

Award nominations

AKRON: The city is seeking nominations for its 23rd Global Youth Service Day.

The deadline for nominations is Friday.

Organizations are asked to nominate a youth volunteer between 12 to 18 years of age who has volunteered at least 20 hours in 2012 to their organization or program.

The three youth volunteer age categories are 12 to 13, 14 to 15, and 16 and older.

All nominated youth volunteers will be honored at a reception and awards ceremony April 23 at the main Akron-Summit County Public Library.

In each category, a Volunteer of the Year and Outstanding Volunteer will be selected.

Organizations whose nominees are selected for these two top honors will receive cash prizes to help further their volunteer programs.

Cyberbullying

ATWATER TWP: The Waterloo Community Action Committee will hold a parent cyberbullying seminar at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Waterloo High School Media Center.

This meeting will be a follow up to the Jan. 7 bullying meeting.

Parents will learn the basics of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The meeting will be active and hands on. If you already have a user name and password for any of these sites, please bring it with you.

Nominees sought

KENT: Organizers of the 15th annual Portage County Environmental Conservation Award Benefit Dinner on April 27 are seeking nominations of potential recipients.

The deadline for nominations is March 15. Forms are available at www.portageparkdistrict.org. Forms should be sent to the Portage Park District, 705 Oakwood St., Suite G-04, Ravenna, OH 44266, or email to ccraycroft@portageparkdistrict.org.

Recipients will be honored for their contributions to education, green business, green development, stewardship and environmental activism.

The dinner will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kent American Legion, 1945 Mogadore Road.

SPRINGFIELD TWP.

Man arrested

SPRINGFIELD TWP.: A Lakemore man is in jail after resisting efforts by police to serve him with a warrant.

James C. Barrett, of Springfield Lake Drive, barricaded himself inside his home at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday and would not comply with repeated requests for his surrender, township police said.

METRO S.W.A.T. was activated and responded to the scene.

At 8:30 a.m., Barrett exited the house and was arrested by SWAT members. He was charged with obstructing justice and inducing panic.

He is being held at the Portage County Jail on outstanding felony warrants for aggravated menacing and violation of a protection order.

STARK COUNTY

Casino night

MASSILLON: Friends of Stark Parks is holding its second annual speakeasy casino night on Saturday.

The fundraising dinner will run from 6 to 10 p.m. at the historic Five Oaks Mansion, 210 Fourth St. NE.

Tickets are $75 per couple or $50 a person.

Guests are invited to attend in 1920s costumes.

Easter donations

AKRON: Summit County Children Services is accepting donated Easter baskets for boys and girls of all ages in care of the county.

For young boys’ baskets suggested items are small outdoor toys, cars and trucks, activity books, markers, candy and chocolate bunnies, and hand-held games.

For teens’ baskets suggested items are snacks, school locker items, personal care products, candy and chocolate bunnies.

Infants’ baskets should include soft stuffed animals, infant care items, rattles and pacifiers.

Filled, wrapped baskets should be labeled with the child’s age and gender and delivered between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday through March 10 to the Summit County Children services, 264 S. Arlington St., in Akron.

Monetary donations are welcome as well.

Parade plans

AKRON: The annual St. Patrick’s Day Akron Parade will be held Saturday.

The parade will start at noon on Exchange Street and end on Bowery Street.

This year’s theme is the Irish Proudly Honor our Men and Women in Uniform.

Night at the races.

AKRON: The Greenleaf Family Center will host a Night at the Races at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Presentation of Our Lord Banquet Facility, 3365 Ridgewood Road in Fairlawn.

The event will include dinner, horse betting, 10 races, prizes, a 50/50 raffle, a DJ and dancing and cash payouts.

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. followed by post time at 7 p.m.

Tickets for $15 a person include dinner and refreshments.

Tickets for $25 a person include dinner, refreshments and a chance to win a week in a beachfront condo in Madeira Beach, Fla.

Attendees will be given the option to purchase and name a horse for $20 and receive $50 if it wins.

Winners are not required to be present to win.

Sponsorships are also available for $25.

Meeting set

AKRON: The Scottish American Society will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. March 10 in the meeting-room level of the Akron-Summit County Public Main Library, 60 S. High St.

The meeting will feature Bill Kennedy, who will discuss the history of Clan Kennedy.

The meeting is open to the public.

Annual dinner

AKRON: The Women’s Endowment Fund’s “For Women Forever” annual dinner will be held March 13 at Quaker Station at Quaker Square Inn at the University of Akron.

The event will feature four-time Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist and Oprah-featured author Fawn Germer as keynote speaker.

The annual event celebrates women’s philanthropy in Akron and raises money or the Women’s Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation.

In addition, the event will honor leadership donors.

Tickets are $75 a person. Individuals and organizations that purchase tickets at or above $225 will be invited to a sponsor reception to meet Germer.

AKRON: The Citizens for Judge Alison McCarty will host a “Retire the Debt Party” from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at 750 ml, 2287 W. Market St.
