Five young men from the Akron area received their Eagle Scout Award, Boy Scouting’s highest honor. The boys are members of the Venture Crew 2060 sponsored by the Church of Latter Day Saints. Copley High students are Ethan Davis, son of Randall and Angela Davis; Jacob Davis and Jared Davis, sons of Michael and Giselle Davis; and Nathan Stark, son of Paul and Veronique Stark. Jordan Coburn, son of Quinn and Denna Coburn of Richfield, attends Revere High. Boy Scouts must complete at least 21 merit badges and direct a leadership project focused on community service to get the organization’s highest honor.

Former Summit County Probate Court Judge Todd McKenney was selected to receive the Liberty Bell Award from the Akron Bar Association for developing a program that helps residents avoid probate court when transferring property at death.

Education

Robin Elizabeth Smith of Sharon Center was inducted into the Beta Gamma Epsilon chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Stark State College. She is majoring in mechanical engineering.

Kent State’s MBA team won the grand prize in the Cleveland Association for Corporate Growth competition on mergers and acquisitions. The team members were second-year MBA students Josh Hostetler, Brad Neumann, Frank Russ and Kaushik Saha. They won an all-expenses-paid trip to Orlando for the ACG Global Conference in April.

Michelle Boltz, nutrition and dietetics clinical instructor at the University of Akron, received the Outstanding Educator Award in a Coordinated Program in Dietetics for 2012-13 from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization for food and nutrition professionals. Boltz is a clinical instructor at students’ supervised practice sites and is an adviser for the Student 
Dietetic Association.

Kent State named three faculty this year’s Outstanding Research and Scholar Award recipients. This year’s winners are art professor Michael Loderstedt, whose specialties include printmaking, book arts and photography; Katherine Rawson, an associate professor in psychology whose basic and applied research focuses on text comprehension and memory; and Carrie Schweitzer, a geology professor at the KSU Stark Campus, who is an expert in decapod crustaceans, which include crayfish, lobster and shrimp.

Tymoor Husain, a graduate of Firestone High School in Akron, received a half-tuition scholarship to Shimer College, a small, private college in Chicago whose curriculum focuses on great books.

Vanessa Reese, a fashion merchandising major at Kent State, received a First Generation Scholarship from Jo-Ann Stores Inc.

Military

Army National Guard Pfc. Darrell Hammett, son of Sharon Lewis of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. He is a 2009 graduate of Firestone High School, Akron.

Army National Guard Pfc. Ryan N. Eskew, son of Tim Eskew and stepson of Renee Eskew, both of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

He is a 2007 graduate of Akron’s North High School.

Navy Seaman Debbie J. Knobelsdorf, daughter of Maria E. and Timothy J. Maximovich of Akron, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 2009 graduate of Firestone High in Akron.
