WADSWORTH: The city’s Electric and Communications Department is offering its customers an opportunity to receive free compact fluorescent bulbs and digital thermometers this month.

Electricity customers can obtain free CFLs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday and April 16 at City Hall, 120 Maple St., while supplies last.

CFLs last longer and use less energy than incandescent bulbs and result in savings for the homeowner.

The city is in the midst of an energy-efficiency program to reduce the amount of electricity customers use.

Two programs are under way to promote energy efficiency: Peak Rewards and Right Time Pricing.

Peak Rewards provides for high energy-using appliances, such as air conditioners, to be regulated by the city during the hot summer months. Right Time Pricing provides customers an incentive for using energy during off-peak hours.

In addition, rebates are available for purchasing Energy Star appliances.

More information on the programs can be obtained at 1-877-889-3777 or at www.efficiencysmart.org.

Digital thermometers will be exchanged for mercury thermometers at 365 Broad St. from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. April 27.

Mercury thermometers — those with silver liquid inside — are to be wrapped in two plastic bags when brought to be exchanged. If the mercury is not properly disposed of, the environment can be harmed.

Exchanging the mercury thermometer for a digital one “will help our customers help the environment, and we hope our customers will take advantage of this opportunity,” Service Director Chris Easton said in a news release.
