Joseph Smith, a sophomore at the College of Wooster, received the Joseph Albertus Culler Prize in Physics at Wooster’s 43rd annual Recognition Banquet. The prize goes to the first- or second-year student with the highest rank in general college physics. Smith is the son of Forest and Monica Smith of Clinton.

Hiram College senior Bryan Nemire of Berlin Heights won first place at the Entrepreneurship Education Consortium’s idealabs regional competition in March at Kent State. Nemire, an environmental studies and biology major, won with his idea Citrus Icer, a product for the agricultural industry.

Five alumni of the College of Business Administration at the University of Akron were selected to receive the Frank L. Simonetti Distinguished Alumni Award. The winners are: Joseph C. Hete, president and chief executive officer of Air Transport Services Group Inc.; Mona Sarkar, vice president and team leader of Wealth Management Services, FirstMerit Bank; Keith R. Smiley, vice president of finance and controller, RPM International Inc.; Gene Stalnaker, Tallmadge City Council and retired president and director, Falls Savings Bank; and Jeffery A. Walters, president and managing director, Northeast Ohio, CBIZ/Mayer Hoffman McCann.

Four Akron-area residents were among those selected for the Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute’s Summer Pediatric Research Scholars program at Akron Children’s Hospital. The 12 students, college sophomores or juniors who are interested in careers in medical-related fields include: Meghan Fennell of Canal Fulton and Taylor Hendricks of Stow, both of whom attend Miami University; Avish Jain of Akron, Ohio State; and Nathan Steiner of Garrettsville, University of Mount Union.

Adrian Trust of Akron and Nathanael H. Hunter of Brunswick received $2,500 National Achievement Scholarships from the not-for-profit of the same name. Both students plans to study chemistry in college.

The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges selected Clifford D. Shields, a University of Mount Union graduate now living in suburban Denver, for induction into its Hall of Excellence. He is the retired director of education relations and corporate contributions at the Standard Oil Company of Ohio.

Miami University student Hannah Ross of Hudson placed first in duo interpretation with partner Alex Zerby at the 31st annual Novice National Tournament in forensics. She is a sophomore majoring in integrated math education.

Derek Spangler of Canton and James Steinbauer of Aurora were among 23 Ohio high school seniors to receive a Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, a full tuition and housing college scholarship, beginning this fall. Evans Scholars are golf caddies who were selected based on a strong caddie record, academics, financial need and character. The students received scholarships valued at more than $70,000 over four years to Ohio State or Miami University. Derek will attend Ohio State and James, Miami. The Western Golf Association in Golf, Ill., oversees the scholarship program.

Renee Calderon, a double major in biomedical engineering and chemistry at the University of Akron, was named a 2013 Goldwater Scholar by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. She plans to pursue a doctorate with a research focus on biomaterials and tissue engineering. She is the daughter of Thomas and Adrienne Calderon of Canton.

Matt Simpson, a masonry instructor at Buchtel Community Learning Center in Akron, was named the 2013 Outstanding New Career and Technical Teacher by the Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education.

Sally Schneider, vocal music director at Firestone High in Akron, will be one of six teachers to receive the James Thomas High School Teacher Award at Baldwin Wallace University this month.

The award comes with a $1,000 award for Schneider and for her school. The award recognizes high school teachers who had a positive impact on a Baldwin Wallace student’s life. Schneider was nominated by graduating student Catherine Lehman.

Military

Army Spec. Shanna M. Senior-Tracey graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the niece of Uriel Walters of Akron.

Army Pvt. Addison C. Uselton graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Kim Kohler of Strongsville and Paul Uselton of Copley. He is a 2011 graduate of Strongsville High School.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Trenton T. Thompson, son of Tiffany Thompson of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio. He is a 2012 graduate of Buchtel High School, Akron.

Army Private Mathew R.M. Hamas, son of Robert Hamas of Akron and Cheri Cradlebaugh of Cuyahoga Falls, graduated from basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. He is a 2010 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls.

Navy Seaman Recruit Curt A. Wozniak, a 2012 graduate of Twinsburg High School, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
