Recounts scheduled in four close Summit County elections

The Summit County Board of Elections on Tuesday will recount four results from the Nov. 5 election: Akron Municipal Court judge, Richfield Township trustee, Tallmadge council-at-large and a Manchester school levy.

The outcomes were separated by 0.5 percent or less, which triggers an automatic recount.

Elections board employees will hand-count 5 percent of the votes cast in these races to see if the results match current totals. If the two totals match, the board will recount the remainder of the ballots using its tabulation machines, said Joe Masich, the board’s director.

In unofficial results, Akron Municipal Judge Katarina Cook is beating Magistrate Jon Oldham by 17 votes, Richfield Township Trustee Laurie Peters is trailing challenger Robert Luther by one vote and the Manchester school levy is winning by 11 votes.

The Tallmadge council race will result in an at-large incumbent losing a seat. Ward 3 Councilman James Donovan was the top vote-getter for three available at-large seats, with Councilman-at-large John Rensel second. Kim Ray edged out Council President Robert Maguire for the third at-large seat by 22 votes. That narrow difference prompted the recount for the final spot.

Recounts may be requested in races that don’t trigger automatic recounts but are still close. As of Tuesday, no such requests had been made, Masich said.
