Man shot near UA
AKRON: A 20-year-old man was injured Friday afternoon after he was shot while driving on Annadale Avenue east of state Route 8 near the University of Akron campus.
The victim, who has not been identified, ran to his home nearby and was taken to City Hospital by a friend. He was in surgery Friday night.
Police were called to the 100 block of Annadale at 2:50 p.m. and found the victim’s car, a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, had hit a pole. Police do not know if the shooter was in the car or nearby.
University of Akron police notified students and faculty, telling them to stay indoors.
BOSTON TOWNSHIP
Road closing
BOSTON TWP.: Akron Peninsula Road, just south of Northampton Road, will be closed to all traffic for 40 days beginning Monday, Summit County Engineer Al Brubaker said.
Contractors will repair the bridge over Robinson Run.
The engineer advised motorists to use Bolanz Road, Riverview Road and state Route 303 as a detour.
CAMPAIGN TRAIL
Bus tour
AKRON: A Congressional Black Caucus “Get Out the Vote” bus tour kicked off Friday afternoon with a stop in Akron.
U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge, who is unopposed in the Nov. 6 election and will be a new representative for part of Akron, is among the congressional members on the tour.
The bus tour stopped at Greater Bethel Baptist Church, 404 S. Arlington St. in Akron at 1:30 p.m. The event was hosted by Fudge and the Rev. Melford Elliott.
The tour will make stops today and Sunday in Columbus and Cleveland.
Milkovich meeting
AKRON: State Rep. Zack Milkovich, D-Akron, will have a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Firestone Park library branch, 1486 Aster Ave.
The topic will be Issue 3, an Akron charter issue on Tuesday’s ballot. Speakers will include Andrae Long, who is leading the opposition to the issue, and Councilman Bruce Kilby, who also opposes the issue.
GOP event in Stow
STOW: Congressman Aaron Shock, former Democratic Congressman Artur Davis and former U.S. Treasurer Bay Buchanan will attend get-out-the-vote events for Mitt Romney’s campaign across Ohio today, including a stop in Stow.
The Stow event will be at 5:45 p.m. at Romney’s campaign office at 3889 Darrow Road.
They also will visit Brecksville, Youngstown and Steubenville.
CANTON
Property clean up
CANTON: The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has issued a covenant not to sue in connection with cleaning up a contaminated industrial site.
The document was issued to International Utility Structures Inc. for the Union Metal Corp. property at 1432 Maple Ave.
The 41-acre property was used as a manufacturing site for steel and aluminum light and sign poles, cell towers, pilings and other products.
The firm hired an environmental professional to assess the contamination problems and devise a cleanup plan. That included removal of contaminated soils and will allow the continued commercial/industrial use of the site.
NORTHEAST OHIO
Carrot recall
The California company Bolthouse Farms has recalled approximately 134,000 bags of its fresh Carrot Chips due to possible contamination with salmonella.
The fresh carrots in crinkle-cut rounds were sold locally at Walmart and Marc’s stores, according to company spokesman Todd Putman.
The carrots were sold in 16-ounce bags with the following codes and date markings: BEST IF USED BY NOV 12 2012/04 T XXXX/BF 212 J11/UPC 71464 17209 and BEST IF USED BY NOV 13 2012/04T XXXX BF 212 J 12/UPC 71464 17209.
Customers who have purchased the carrots with those codes and dates should not eat them and are encouraged to return the product to the store where they purchased it for an exchange or full refund. Consumers also can contact Bolthouse Farms at 1-866-535-3774 for more information. Bolthouse is owned by the Campbell Soup Co.
A routine sampling by North Carolina health officials detected the possibility of salmonella on one bag that was tested. No illnesses have been reported from the carrots.
NORTH CANTON
Checks stolen
NORTH CANTON: Police say thieves are taking checks from mailboxes and using them to steal cash from bank accounts.
Police say residents put the outgoing checks in mailboxes and raised the red flag to alert letter carriers to pick them up.
The suspects, a man and woman, drove a white Lincoln Town Car to pick up the mail including the checks and left a flyer about flu shots. They then used the resident’s account numbers to make deposits using fraudulent checks, taking out half the deposit in cash. Thousands of dollars have been taken so far.
PORTAGE COUNTY
Warrant sweep
RAVENNA: The Portage County Drug Task Force swept the county Friday armed with 35 arrest warrants for violations of state narcotics laws and other related charges.
Sheriff David Doak said the task force has been running undercover operations purchasing heroin, methamphetamine, prescription drugs and marijuana in the county over the past four months.
On Friday, the task force — with assistance from several local, state and federal agencies — will attempt to arrest the individuals named in the warrants. The warrants charge over 90 violations of state narcotics laws, according to the drug task force.
