Four Akron-area employees in the Ohio Department of Transportation have been recognized for their work on the Interstate 277/U.S. 224 construction project in Summit County.

Planning and engineering employees Thomas J. Powell and Lisa Bose and construction employees Anthony Pamer and Jason Young received the Governor’s Award for Employee Excellence.

The construction project saved taxpayers about $20 million, led to a safer work zone and condensed a two-year construction project to one construction season, officials said.

The aggressive work schedule allowed the highway to be closed for 56 days (28 days in each direction).

“Time and money are our currency at ODOT and the employees recognized ... saved the state of Ohio both,” ODOT Director Jerry Wray said.

The project involved repairs to a four-mile portion of I-277/U.S. 224 between the Kenmore leg of Interstate 76 and Interstate 77 in South Akron.

The Governor’s Award goes to state employees and groups of state employees for work-related achievements.
